Nestled in the very heart of Houston is River Oaks, which is most easily recognisable by the mansions which line the main boulevard and streets of this elegant community. Home to many CEO’s, highly successful entrepreneurs and board directors it has earned the reputation of being one not only Houston’s but the entire Southwest regions most exclusive neighbourhoods.
Developed in the early 1920’s by associates William Hogg and Hugh Potter, the residential portion of River Oaks covers an area of approximately 1,200 acres. It features shady boulevards, meticulously landscaped and spacious lawns with breathtaking views of the bayou. The elegance and grace of this neighbourhood is strictly enforced by some of the strongest ordinances and deed restrictions in Houston.
It is bordered by Buffalo Bayou and Westheimer to the north and south, and by Sheperd Drive and East Briar Hollow Lane to the east and west. It provides easy access to several attractions and amenities including Greenway Plaza, the Galleria, and a number of museums, theatres and cultural events. It is also a mere four miles away from the Central Business District.
Much of the architecture in the area is quite traditional and in fact showcases work from many of the nationally recognised architects of the era which include John F. Staub and Birdsall Briscoe. ‘Bayou Bend’ is one of these homes and was built by William Hogg’s sister, Ima. She later donated the magnificent example of Greek Revival architecture to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The donation included the extensive collection of early American furnishings and antiques.
